NHL explained for European hockey fans
If you follow European hockey, the NHL will feel familiar and strange at the same time. Same sport, very different rhythm. Here is the structure before you start predicting it.
1. 32 teams, two conferences
The league splits into an Eastern and a Western Conference, each further split into two divisions. Standings and play-off spots are decided within these groups, not in one flat table of 32.
2. An 82-game season is a different kind of long
Most European leagues play half that many games. Form matters less on any single night; consistency over months matters more.
3. Nearly every night is a game night
The NHL runs games most days of the week, often several at once. Weekly predictions are still grouped by calendar week, exactly as in the Premier League and the Championship: you pick the whole week in one pass and the entire week locks at the week's first puck drop.
4. Overtime and shootouts always produce a winner
There are no draws. A game tied after regulation goes to a short overtime, then a shootout if still level. Every game resolves to a win for someone.
5. The play-offs are a different tournament
The regular season decides who qualifies; the play-offs (16 teams, best-of-seven rounds) are where the actual champion is decided, often producing very different results from the regular-season table.
6. Travel and schedule density matter more here
Back-to-back games, playing on consecutive nights and sometimes in different cities, are common and genuinely affect performance in a way most European leagues do not have to account for.
